English
At Danegrove our aim is to develop a child’s lifelong passion for all areas of English. We encourage and support our children to be able to speak fluently, read for both enjoyment and meaning as well as being able to write in any genre whether it be a letter of complaint or a beautiful poem.
We deliver English through an engaging and comprehensive approach that fosters a love for language and literacy. Central to our methodology is teaching through core texts, which utilises a diverse array of high-quality texts. This enables our teachers to design fun, engaging and creative cycles of English, with a diverse focus on key learning outcomes.
Our English curriculum aims to cultivate skills and knowledge that empower pupils to communicate effectively and thoughtfully through both spoken and written language, thus equipping them to become lifelong learners. At Danegrove, we encourage our pupils to express themselves fluently, facilitating an environment where ideas and emotions can be shared and understood.
Oracy is intricately woven into our literacy cycles, ensuring that through reading, students are able to enhance their verbal prowess.
Early Reading is taught through a synthetic phonics approach for word reading- using the reading scheme 'Read, Write, Inc.' Alongside this, we use 'Destination Reader' to develop children’s comprehension. Through lively discussion children focus on predicting, making connections, asking questions, evaluating, inferring, summarising and clarifying. The high-quality texts we select, align with key themes being taught elsewhere within a year groups curriculum allowing for opportunities for significant language acquisition, which in turn, means children expand their vocabulary and deepen their comprehension.
Grammar is taught through English lessons and we encourage our children to become grammar experts from a young age which in turn helps them to play with words in sentences. Spelling is taught weekly through learning of specific patterns and rules. Children play games and complete learning activities relating to the spelling patterns.
By consistently practising essential skills through carefully planned lessons, our pupils are well-prepared to achieve their national curriculum outcomes by the end of each academic year, paving the way for their future educational journeys.
