Phonics
Teaching Phonics using Read Write Inc.
Phonics is a method of teaching children to read by linking sounds (phonemes) and the symbols that represent them (graphemes). At Danegrove Primary School, we firmly believe that every child can become a fluent reader and writer, with reading at the core of everything we do. This is why we use Read Write Inc (RWI), a phonics-based reading programme to help children learn to read and write. RWI teaches children the sounds that letters make, how to blend them to read words, and how to write these words down. RWI is designed to give children the skills they need to become confident and fluent readers.
In Reception, children start by learning simple letter sounds, such as ‘s’, ‘a’, and ‘t’. They also learn how to blend these sounds together to read short words, like ‘sat’. As they progress, they learn more complex sounds, like ‘sh’ and ‘ch’. Children practise reading books that match the sounds they’ve been learning, which helps them build confidence.
By Year 1, children continue to learn new sounds and practise reading more challenging books. They also begin writing sentences and learning how to spell words correctly. In Year 2, children focus on reading more fluently and with understanding, preparing them for longer texts.
